- Radiation effects and microstructural evolution in metals and alloys (such as ferritic/martensitic steels, oxide dispersion strengthened [ODS] alloys, and compositionally complex alloys).
- Additive manufacturing and microstructure engineering.
- Advanced materials characterization using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), and complementary structural techniques.
- Corrosion, tribocorrosion, extreme environment testing, multiphysics modeling, and AI-guided material design.
Location
The position is based at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, United States, with potential research stays and collaborative opportunities at leading U.S. national laboratories.
Eligibility and Qualifications
- Required Degree: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or a closely related field. (A Master’s degree is preferred, but strong candidates with a Bachelor’s degree are encouraged to apply).
- Desirable Experience: Prior research background in physical metallurgy, advanced manufacturing, electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), or radiation damage in materials.
- Attributes: Strong motivation, curiosity, and interest in interdisciplinary research bridging experimental testing, microscopy, and materials discovery.
Scholarship and Position Description
The accepted doctoral candidate will join a dynamic research group focused on microstructural performance and engineering of advanced alloys. Graduate researchers receive financial support to pursue their doctoral studies at Virginia Tech, with opportunities to apply for international or U.S.-based graduate research fellowships under faculty mentorship.
