Job Description

How do cells organize into complex human tissues, and can AI uncover tissue architecture in health and disease? This postdoctoral project, funded by Digital Futures in collaboration with Assistant Professor Wei Ouyang’s AICell Lab, aims to build autonomous AI agents capable of performing end-to-end bioinformatics analysis—including writing and executing code, evaluating results, refining analytical approaches, and generating testable biological hypotheses.

Key research focuses on human gastrointestinal disorders, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and colorectal cancer. Core duties and responsibilities include:

  • Developing and evaluating autonomous AI agents for automated analysis of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data.
  • Integrating large-scale spatial transcriptomics datasets across diverse technologies, tissues, and disease states.
  • Investigating biological mechanisms of tissue organization, including intercellular signalling and immune cell migration.
  • Disseminating research findings through high-impact scientific publications, international conferences, and open-source software packages.
  • Mentoring junior students and actively participating in interdisciplinary collaborative projects.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Mandatory Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree (must be completed by the time the employment decision is finalized).
  • Substantial research expertise in computational biology methods tailored for single-cell or spatial transcriptomics data.
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence evidenced by a strong publication record relative to career stage.
  • Experience developing or applying modern machine learning methods, such as deep learning, foundation models, large language models (LLMs), or autonomous AI agents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  • Strong background in scientific data visualization and communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively across disciplines.
  • Interest or prior experience in student mentorship and teaching.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted electronically through KTH’s online recruitment platform. Ensure your application is complete and includes the following required documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detailing relevant professional experience, education, and complete publication list.
  • Letter of Motivation: A brief cover letter (maximum 2 pages) describing your research interests, why you want to pursue this project, and how it aligns with your past training and future goals.
  • PhD Diploma / Certificate: Copy of your degree certificate (with official English or Swedish translations if the original is in another language).
