Scholarship Description

This doctoral research will be conducted within the framework of the REMODEL project, which tackles the complex challenge of generating and adapting high-quality meshes for complex engineering simulations on exascale and heterogeneous high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. The candidate will work closely with open-source tools developed within the renowned Nektar++ research group.

Key focus areas of the project include:

  • Developing automatic adaptive mesh generation methods for multi-physics and time-dependent simulations.
  • Formulating strategies for coupling multi-physics solvers with dynamic mesh adaptation in parallel HPC environments.
  • Creating efficient algorithms optimized for heterogeneous CPU–GPU and exascale computing architectures.
  • Building integrated, high-fidelity simulation workflows tailored for industrial applications.
  • Designing methods for sensitivity assessment regarding geometric features and mesh resolution.

Supervisors: Prof. Spencer Sherwin, Prof. Joaquim Peiro, and Dr. Chris Cantwell.

Benefits and Value: The award provides full tuition fee coverage (applicable to UK, EU, and International students) plus an annual tax-free living allowance (stipend) of £23,805 for up to 3.5 years. The start date will be between 1st August 2027 and 1st July 2028.

Eligibility / Qualification

  • Academic Qualifications: Candidates should hold, or expect to achieve, a First-Class Honours MEng/MSci degree (or international equivalent) in Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Technical Knowledge: A strong foundational knowledge in CFD and meshing techniques.
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in software development using high-level programming languages, preferably applied in an HPC environment.
  • Key Attributes: Creative approach to problem-solving, willingness to work in multidisciplinary teams, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
