Study Area: This Ph.D. position focuses on the development of novel phase extraction algorithms for laser interferometric inertial sensors. The research will be based on Deep Frequency Modulation Interferometry and aims to advance the field of gravitational physics.

Scholarship Description:

PhD Position in “Novel Phase Extraction Algorithms for Laser Interferometric Inertial Sensors based on Deep Frequency Modulation Interferometry”

As a Ph.D. student at AEI, your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing compact optical interferometers.
  • Developing readout electronics and algorithms.
  • Building and operating experiments.
  • Deploying sensors in the torsion balance facility.
  • Analyzing research results and contributing to scientific publications.
  • Extending existing work on optical sensor head topologies.
  • Exploring readout schemes based on Deep Frequency or Deep Phase Modulation Interferometry and developing novel algorithms, potentially utilizing Kalman filters.

Eligibility: We seek candidates with previous experience in laser interferometry (experimental), analog and digital electronics, data analysis techniques such as nonlinear least-squares fitting and Kalman filtering. While a master’s degree in Physics or Mathematics is preferred, candidates without this qualification may pursue a Ph.D. in Physics, with the option to complete additional graduate-level Physics courses.

Required Documents: Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • A cover letter.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV).
  • University transcripts.
  • A statement of research interests.
  • A list of publications (if available).
  • Master thesis (if available).
  • Names and contact information of two referees for recommendation letters.

How to Apply: To apply, please use our job portal at https://jobs.aei.mpg.de/152/phd-position-novel-phase-extraction-algorithms/apply. If you encounter any issues with the application form, please contact jobs@aei.mpg.de.

Last Date: For full consideration, submit your application by September 30, 2023, including the receipt of reference letters. Applications will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled.

Equal Opportunities: The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusivity. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences, embracing a culture of equal opportunity and work-life balance (Code of Conduct).
