Job Description:

PhD Position – Particle Free Contactless Wafer Handling, WP2

In collaboration with VDL-ETG, a key player in the Dutch high-tech industry, this research project at TU Delft aims to revolutionize wafer handling systems, focusing on particle-free and contactless handling of Si-wafers. The project encompasses three research directions, with this position specifically focusing on WP2:

WP2: Development of metamaterial structures with appropriate properties for contact without particle generation In this work package, you will explore the concept of compliant wafer handlers/grippers made of Nitinol, a shape-memory alloy. The goal is to design structures that enable contact without generating wear particles and minimize contamination, damage, or breakage of the substrates. The use of Nitinol offers unique properties, including super-elasticity and high vibrational damping, which will be harnessed for this purpose. Additionally, the project will investigate SMA-based metamaterials through kirigami-inspired techniques, enabling the tuning of mechanical properties for optimal wafer handling.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A 4-year employment period with two contracts (initial 1.5 years with a progress assessment, followed by an additional 2.5 years).
  • Competitive salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Enrollment in the TU Delft Graduate School, offering a supportive research environment and skills development.
  • Customizable compensation package, health insurance discounts, and sport memberships.
  • Assistance for international applicants through the “Coming to Delft Service.”
