4-Year Post-Doctoral Fellowship : Join the Earth and Ocean Lab at the Department of Geography, University College Cork for a 1-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship to contribute to the I-POINT project. This research aims to map and assess the pollution potential of shipwrecks around Ireland and inform policy makers on managing shipwreck-based pollution.

Scholarship Description:
4-Year Post-Doctoral Fellowship – Instability and Pollution Potential Mapping of Irish Shipwreck Sites for a National Risk Assessment Database (I-PoINt)
The I-POINT project focuses on identifying, mapping, and ranking polluting shipwrecks around Ireland. It employs data-driven assessment, web scraping, and machine learning to analyze historical records and peer-reviewed literature. The project also involves multisensory surveys to map intensely polluting wrecks and create high-resolution 3D models for hydrodynamic modeling using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The research will inform policy makers on managing and remediating shipwreck-based pollution in the short and long term.
Eligibility: Candidates with experience and knowledge in seafloor mapping and imaging (ROV-derived photogrammetry acquisition and processing, multibeam sonar), data mining/web-scraping, sediment analysis (geochemical and particle size), CFD modeling, and Irish shipwreck heritage and policy are encouraged to apply. The appointee will collaborate with PI’s at University College Cork and University College Dublin and engage with external stakeholder organizations.
Required Documents: Please refer to the candidate information pack for detailed application requirements.
