Job Description:

Doctoral (PhD) Student Position in Characterization of Mycobacteria Toxin-Antitoxin Systems as Phage Defense and Antimicrobial Agents

The selected doctoral student will have the unique opportunity to work in the Fossati lab, a part of Karolinska Institutet’s Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology. The focus of this research project is the characterization of Mycobacteria toxin-antitoxin systems and their potential as phage defense mechanisms and antimicrobial agents.

As a doctoral student, you will be actively involved in the following:

  • Conduct mass-spectrometry-based proteomics experiments.
  • Work on functional and comparative genomics research.
  • Utilize computational systems biology to analyze data.
  • Enroll in relevant PhD courses at Karolinska Institutet.
  • Actively participate in research seminars and educational initiatives within the department.

Eligibility/Qualification:

General Eligibility Requirement (A): To be eligible for doctoral education, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e., master’s degree).
  • Have completed courses totaling at least 240 credits, with at least 60 credits at the advanced/second-cycle/master level.
  • Acquire substantially equivalent knowledge through other means in Sweden or abroad.

Specific Eligibility Requirement (B): In addition to the general requirements, you must demonstrate proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Applicants must also possess the following skills and qualities:

  • Prior experience in bacteriophage infection and isolation.
  • Knowledge of bacterial culture techniques.
  • Hands-on experience in basic molecular biology techniques (cloning, protein expression, protein purification, PCR, Western blot, etc).

Meritorious qualifications include:

  • Prior experience in multi-protein bacterial antiphage systems (e.g., Argonaute, Gabja, Hachiman, etc).
  • Proficiency in preparative and analytical PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, OE-PCR, Gibson assembly, restriction-ligation, RPA.
  • Experience in NGS data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Python/R.
  • Basic Unix skills.

Terms and Conditions: The doctoral student will be employed on a full-time doctoral studentship for a maximum of 4 years.
