Job Description:

PhD Researcher in Neural Event Detection and Behavior Analysis

The CMC Lab is embarking on a groundbreaking project to investigate neural events and their connection to behavior. The project aims to address the following key questions:

  1. How can we reliably detect neural events in data? The project will involve the development of unsupervised machine-learning methods for identifying neural events.
  2. Are neural events coupled to behavior, and if so, how? Our methods will be used to explore the occurrence of various neural events in a range of behavioral tasks.
  3. How do multi-scale dynamics of neural events support behavior? The project will focus on characterizing the multi-scale signature of neural events, including how different brain regions interact during various behavioral tasks.

The overarching goal of this project is to identify accessible neural markers of cognitive processes and shed light on coordination mechanisms in the brain that are relevant to behavior.

Qualifications/Eligibility:

  • (N) Master’s or Diploma in (computational) neuroscience, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, statistics, machine learning, psychology, or related fields.
  • (N) Comfortable with programming, preferably in Python or Matlab.
  • (D) Experience in the analysis of neurophysiology data.
  • (D) Familiarity with computational and systems neuroscience.
  • (D) Familiarity with machine learning techniques or a sufficient mathematical background.
  • (P) Basic knowledge of software engineering (e.g., packaging scientific tools).

Learning Targets: As a PhD researcher in this project, you will have the opportunity to develop a range of research-oriented skills, including critical thinking, organizing and optimizing research workflows, scientific writing, and networking. You will also gain expertise in data analysis techniques for multi-scale analysis of brain data and learn about various approaches to bridge neural dynamics and behavior. Additionally, you will be exposed to a wide range of topics in systems and computational neuroscience and receive training toward establishing an independent research group.
