AARMS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences, Canada

Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship (in Any Discipline) in Canada

Summary

The Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) invites applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowship program. This prestigious fellowship supports early-career researchers in the Mathematical Sciences or closely related fields, offering funding and opportunities for research collaboration across AARMS member universities in Atlantic Canada.

Designation

Postdoctoral Fellow

Research Area

  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Closely related fields

Location

Various locations across AARMS member universities in Atlantic Canada.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Applicants must have received their PhD no more than four years before the Stage 1 application deadline (November 15).
  • Those anticipating receiving their PhD before the proposed start date are eligible, but the PhD must be conferred before the fellowship begins.
  • The proposed supervisor(s) must be a full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty member at an AARMS member university.
  • It is typically expected that the proposed supervisor will not be the applicant’s PhD supervisor, and the fellowship will be at a different university than where the PhD was awarded.
  • A co-supervisor outside Atlantic Canada is permitted, but the postdoc may not spend more than one semester per year outside Atlantic Canada.

Job Description

AARMS Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded to promising beginning researchers for a duration of normally two years, with funding for the second year contingent on satisfactory performance. Fellows will conduct research in Mathematical Sciences or a closely related field under the guidance of a supervisor(s) from an AARMS member university. AARMS provides $32,500 per year, and the supervisor is responsible for organizing matching funds of at least $20,000. Additionally, AARMS provides travel funding of up to $1500 per year. In cases where a successful candidate also receives an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship, AARMS will contribute an additional $7,500 per year without requiring matching funds. Fellows may be requested to teach up to one class each term.

How to Apply

Applicants must first identify one or more potential supervisors from AARMS member universities and contact them to gauge their interest and ability to support the application. Once potential supervisors are selected, applicants should create an application on MathJobs.org in response to the “AARMS Postdoctoral Fellowship” advertisement. The application must include:

  • A cover letter stating the proposed supervisor(s).
  • An up-to-date CV including a publication list.
  • A detailed description of the research area and the research to be carried out, including how the candidate would interact with the supervisor(s).
  • Letters of reference from at least two referees familiar with the candidate’s work (submitted directly by referees via MathJobs.org).
  • Completion of the AARMS EDI Self-Identification Questionnaire (link provided in the original advertisement).

Candidates are strongly encouraged to complete the application process well in advance of the deadline, especially regarding reference letters. Supervisors supporting multiple applicants must demonstrate financial capacity for all and are encouraged to rank their applicants in their letter of support.
