AGRI-DRY Scholarship: Join the international network project AGRI-DRY as a PhD researcher within the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network AGRI-DRY (Dryland Agriculture and Land Use; Past, Present and Future Resilience). This project aims to develop an interdisciplinary approach to traditional crop cultivation through the recognition of the complementary value of cultural heritage and sustainable living.

Location: Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Botswana and UNILE, Italy (for project 1); Department of History, University of Botswana and UPF, Spain (for project 2)

Eligibility/Qualification: A relevant Masters Degree in the field of history, archaeology, agricultural science, environmental science, social sciences and/or related fields from a recognized institution. Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Applicants must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. We specifically encourage women and minority candidates, as well as researchers with family obligations and/or special needs to apply.

Job Description:

  • Project 1 – Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Agriculture Today: The focus will be on understanding contemporary evidence of traditional agricultural practices to understand contemporary practice, resilience, and managing a local ecosystem and its services. It will involve exploring the diversity of practices and systems associated with key crops to understand the current and historical ways in which these crops are used in drylands across Africa and Mediterranean Europe.
  • Project 2 – Integrated Approaches to Policy in Traditional Agriculture: The emphasis is on consolidating approaches that integrate identification of traditional knowledge and its historical roots, in situ conservation of resources and local inputs for natural resource management. Key questions to be addressed include how to identify traditional resources and assign value to traditional practices in the modern world, and how to create policy briefings that take into consideration the long-term character of traditional agriculture.
