Eligibility/Qualification

Essential

  • Applicants should hold or expect to attain, as a minimum, a MSc or equivalent in:
  • Biophysics
  • Physics

  • Related areas

Desirable

  • Research project experience in one of the aforementioned disciplines.
  • Experience in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) or microscopy (optical, confocal).

Description

The doctoral candidate will engage in an innovative project that explores the effects of membrane composition and phase separation on condensate formation. The research will utilize AFM imaging and force spectroscopy to characterize sub-saturated phases and identify nucleation steps. In addition, the project will evaluate how membrane tension influences condensate association through experimental approaches, such as stretching supported membranes and using photo-sensitive lipids.

Participants will have opportunities to collaborate and gain hands-on experience through secondments at esteemed institutions, including CSIC (Rivas Group) for protein condensate preparation and the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces (Dimova Group) for preparing asymmetric membranes with photo-responsive lipids.
