Summary
The University of Gothenburg is offering a doctoral position in Medical Science focused on the role of gut mucosal phages in cardiometabolic disease. This project will investigate the complex relationship between phages, bacteria, and gut mucosal cells, particularly how disruptions in this balance, influenced by low fiber intake, may contribute to chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic diseases. The successful candidate will combine clinical cohorts, molecular biology techniques, and advanced data analysis to conduct translational medical research.
Designation
Doctoral Student in Medical Science
Research Area
The project, titled “The role of gut mucosal phages in cardiometabolic disease,” will explore the following key areas:
- Investigating how the composition of phages, their translocation across the gut barrier, and antiviral immune responses differ in colon mucosa with normal vs. impaired mucus protection.
- Determining the effects of a fiber-based dietary intervention designed to prevent excessive mucus degradation.
- Developing a model to predict disruption of the gut mucosal barrier, to be evaluated in non-invasive samples from individuals with cardiometabolic diseases (e.g., fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis) and healthy controls.
Location
Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Medicine, Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Eligibility/Qualification
General Eligibility Requirements for Doctoral Studies:
- Completion of a degree at second-cycle level, OR
- Fulfillment of course requirements totaling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, OR
- Acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.
Specific Entry Requirements:
- Completion of the English B/6 course or equivalent knowledge acquired through previous studies.
Assessment Criteria:
Selection will be based on the applicant’s ability to assimilate doctoral studies, with particular importance placed on documented qualifications for:
- Specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields.
- Experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology.
- Scientific analysis and presentation verified through an academic paper, degree project, scientific journals, or similar.
Scholarship Description
This is a doctoral position involving a four-year full-time study period leading to a doctoral degree. As part of the employment, the doctoral student may have departmental duties (e.g., teaching, research, administration) corresponding to up to 20% of a full-time employment, which will result in a corresponding extension of the study period. The University applies a local agreement on salaries for doctoral students. Physical presence at the Institute of Medicine is required.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted via the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment portal. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the application is complete and received by the deadline. The application must include the following documents in PDF format:
- Personal letter
- CV
- Diploma and transcripts demonstrating general entry requirements
- Proof of completion of English 6 course or equivalent knowledge
For degrees obtained outside of Sweden, ensure comprehensive diplomas and transcripts are attached to facilitate assessment. Information on English language requirements can be found at universityadmissions.se.
