Eligibility / Qualifications

1. General Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill at least one of the following:

• A second-cycle (Master’s level) qualification.
• Completed courses comprising at least 240 higher education credits (ECTS), of which at least 60 credits were awarded at the second-cycle level.
• Substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.

2. Specific Requirements for Organic Chemistry

• At least 15 higher education credits in Organic Chemistry, including at least 7.5 credits at the advanced level.
• An independent Master’s thesis/project of at least 30 credits at the advanced level in the subject area, OR a Master of Science in Engineering (civilingenjörsexamen) in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, or Engineering Nanoscience.

3. Additional Required Competencies

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Strong background in intermediate and advanced organic synthesis.
• Proficiency in structural determination using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy.
• Strong capability to work independently, formulate research questions, and collaborate effectively in a research team.

4. Desirable / Other Qualifications

• Prior relevant work/laboratory experience in chemistry outside the scope of a Master’s degree.

Scholarship & Employment Description

• Full Employment Status: In Sweden, PhD candidates are formally employed by the university with full social security benefits, paid annual leave, and an occupational pension.
• Duration & Scope: The appointment comprises 4 years of full-time doctoral research and course work. If departmental tasks (e.g., teaching or lab maintenance) are included, they are limited to a maximum of 20% of working hours, extending the employment contract accordingly.
• Work Environment: The Centre for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS) hosts around 100 researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, including advanced mass spectrometry and the National Center for High Resolution Electron Microscopy (nCHREM).
