Four PhD Positions: Join our dynamic community at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Humanities, and Cultural Heritage. We’re offering four PhD positions in collaboration with the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC) and the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory, and Material Culture (AHM). These positions are part of the Natural Language Processing and Digital Humanities unit of the ILLC or the Digital Heritage research group of the AHM.

Four PhD Positions in AI, Digital Humanities, and Cultural Heritage

  • 🧠 Project 1: LLMs for Cultural Heritage Access: Explore the use of large language models for information access, enhancing search capabilities for cultural collections, and supporting complex research tasks such as scholarly investigations and journalistic endeavors.
  • 🤖 Project 2: XAI from Artificial Intelligence to Digital Humanities: Investigate the application of AI explainability (XAI) in digital humanities, examining its significance for analyzing cultural-historical collections and modifying existing XAI methods to suit humanities research needs.
  • 📜 Project 3: XAI from Digital Humanities to Artificial Intelligence: Complementing Project 2, this project focuses on XAI from a historical-cultural perspective, analyzing past human decisions and exploring the cultural and theoretical conditions of XAI in explaining historical materials.
  • 🌍 Project 4: Constructing Polyvocal Cultural Heritage Narratives: Dive into the concept of “polyvocality” in cultural heritage, exploring the inclusion of diverse perspectives and examining methods to capture and represent multiple stakeholder viewpoints in heritage narratives.
  • 🎓 Dynamic Research Environment: Engage in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, digital humanities, and cultural heritage, collaborating with leading experts from the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC) and the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory, and Material Culture (AHM).

Scholarship Description: These four PhD positions are part of the digital Humanities, Artificial Intelligence, Cultural Heritage (HAICu) project, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO NWA). HAICu aims to make digital heritage collections more accessible through AI techniques, fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and societal engagement.

Eligibility: Candidates should hold a master’s degree in artificial intelligence, digital humanities, or cultural heritage. Exceptional candidates nearing completion of their master’s degree may apply with a letter from their supervisor confirming graduation before September 1, 2024.
