Freshwater Climate Refugia PhD: The University of Tasmania invites applications for a PhD scholarship focused on the ecology of freshwater climate refugia. This project aims to investigate the impacts of climate change on freshwater biodiversity, particularly for cold-adapted species in unique ecosystems such as alpine tarns and subterranean pools.
Designation
PhD Scholarship
Research Area
- Freshwater Ecology
- Climate Change Impact Assessment
- Biogeochemistry
Location
University of Tasmania, Hobart
Eligibility/Qualification
- A First-Class Honours degree or equivalent qualifications in ecology, biology, zoology, environmental science, or related disciplines.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Meet English language requirements.
- Must pursue the degree full-time on-campus.
Description
Freshwater ecosystems are significantly impacted by climate change, with cold-adapted species facing increased vulnerability. This project will focus on understanding what supports food webs in these ecosystems, the environmental drivers of key biogeochemical processes, and the susceptibility of aquatic fauna to climate change. Candidates will be based in Hobart and supervised by Dr. Jia-Huan Liew and A/Prof. Leon Barmuta.
Key Project Focus Areas:
- Food Web Dynamics: Investigating how climate change may alter food webs.
- Biogeochemical Processes: Examining carbon dynamics and other drivers.
- Fauna Susceptibility: Assessing the vulnerability of alpine and subterranean species.
How to Apply
- Select the project and ensure eligibility based on the listed criteria.
- Contact Dr. Jia Huan Liew to discuss suitability and project requirements.
- Submit the application, including:
- Project title copy.
- Signed supervisory support form.
- CV with contact details of two referees.
- Project research proposal.
- Apply before the deadline of October 1, 2025.
