Scholarship Description
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by periods of remission and relapse. This project aims to identify the molecular mechanisms that dictate whether a patient’s remission remains stable or if the disease relapses. The core hypothesis is that the intestinal microenvironment is not fully restored during remission, increasing vulnerability to new inflammation.
The PhD student will use both patient-oriented research and experimental models. Daily tasks include handling human patient samples, advanced cell culture (human macrophages), flow cytometry, molecular biology, metabolomics, and lipidomics. Additionally, bioinformatic and statistical methods will be used to integrate molecular data with clinical follow-ups to pinpoint relapse-predicting biomarkers.
Note: As part of the employment, departmental duties (like teaching first- and second-cycle levels) may take up to 20% of your time.
