Eligibility / Qualification

To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, an applicant must:

  1. Citizenship: Be a United States citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident by the application deadline.
  2. Academic Level:
    • Undergraduate seniors planning to enroll in an eligible graduate program by the following fall.
    • First-year graduate students or second-year graduate students with no more than one completed academic year of full-time graduate study in an eligible program.
    • Individuals returning to graduate study after a continuous hiatus of at least two years (with no active graduate enrollment).
  3. Degree Level: Intend to enroll or be enrolled in a full-time, research-based master’s or Ph.D. program in an eligible STEM field.
  4. Application Limits: An individual may apply only once as a graduate student (in either their first or second year).

Scholarship Description

Each fellowship award provides comprehensive support for three years over a five-year tenure window:

  • Direct Financial Support: An annual living stipend of $37,000 disbursed directly to the fellow.
  • Tuition Coverage: An annual $16,000 Cost of Education allowance provided directly to the institution, which covers all tuition and mandatory student fees.
  • Professional Freedom: Freedom to conduct independent research without mandatory teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA) service requirements during active tenure years.
  • Additional Opportunities: Access to specialized NSF professional development, international research collaborations, and supercomputing resources.

How to Apply
