Graduate Research in Microbial Ecology, University of Guelph, Canada

Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship (in Any Discipline) in Canada
Graduate Research in Microbial Ecology: The Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the School of Environment Sciences at the University of Guelph are offering a scholarship for a Ph.D. or a highly motivated MSc student to conduct research on soil microbial processes that influence nitrogen cycling in agricultural systems aimed at improving environmental sustainability.

Graduate Research in Microbial Ecology of Agricultural Nitrogen Management Systems

Designation

Graduate Research Position (Ph.D. or MSc)

Research Area

Microbial Ecology, Soil Science, Environmental Microbiology, Agricultural Nitrogen Management Systems

CategoryDetails
LocationHarrow Research Development Centre (HRDC), Ontario, Canada
Stipend$23,000 (MSc) or $27,000 (PhD) annually
Co-supervisorsDr. Lori Phillips (AAFC) & Dr. Claudia Wagner-Riddle (University of Guelph)

Eligibility/Qualification

  • For Ph.D. applicants: Must hold an M.Sc. degree in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, soil science, or a related field.
  • Must be eligible to enroll in a Ph.D. program at the School of Environment Sciences at the University of Guelph.

Description

The research focuses on addressing major environmental issues in Canadian agriculture, such as reduced carbon inputs from annual cropping and environmental losses associated with nitrogen fertilization (i.e., N2O emissions and nitrate leaching). The selected student will investigate the interactive effects of cover crops and nitrification inhibitors on nitrogen cycling while exploring various co-predictors influencing inhibitor effectiveness across different agricultural regions. This research aims to develop best management practices that enhance soil carbon retention while sustaining crop productivity and aiding Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit an online application that includes:
