About- INDEE+ Post-Doctoral Fellowship (I-PDF) is aimed to identify, encourage, and support the young motivated bright researchers for doing research in the frontier area of Refrigeration and Heat Pumping Technologies. The researcher position is fixed for a period of three years (non-extendable). The fellows will work under a mentor from one of the four Indian Institutes (host) and NTNU, Norway (lead institute), and it is trusted that the INDEE+ network will facilitate the fellows with an effective platform to develop as an independent researcher. Moreover, I-PDF facilitates the research positions in host institutes with gender equality..

Research/Job Area- 

Applicants may apply in their area of research based on the expertise and research interests of IIT Madras faculty members. Candidates are required to identify a potential faculty mentor whose research area aligns with their proposed work.

The research proposal should demonstrate strength, novelty, and value addition and should not simply be an extension of the applicant’s Ph.D. research.

Eligibility/Qualification–

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Candidates who have completed a Ph.D. within the last five years are eligible.
• Ph.D. scholars who have submitted their thesis may also apply. However, they must submit their provisional/degree certificate within six months of joining as an IPDF.
• The maximum age is 32 years at the time of joining.
• Age relaxation:
  • 5 years for SC/ST and women candidates.
  • 3 years for OBC-NCL candidates.
• Applicants must have published at least two Q1 (top-quartile) journal publications as a primary contributor.
• The candidate must be nominated by an IIT Madras faculty member.
• A signed faculty Commitment of Funds form must be submitted with the application.
• Candidates should obtain the prospective mentor’s concurrence for their research proposal before applying.
• IIT Madras Ph.D. scholars are generally not encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates may be considered for a department different from their parent department.
• For IIT Madras Ph.D. graduates selected for the IPDF, the mentor must be a faculty member other than their Ph.D. guide(s).

Job/Position Description- 

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) invites applications for its Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship (IPDF) program. The fellowship is designed to attract high-quality researchers who have demonstrated exceptional potential early in their careers and to provide a bridge between doctoral research and future faculty positions.

Selected fellows will work independently with a faculty mentor, contribute to high-quality research, develop funding proposals, and may have opportunities to serve as co-guides for student projects. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

The Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow will be expected to:

• Conduct high-quality and independent research with the selected faculty mentor.
• Develop and pursue innovative research aligned with the proposed research plan.
• Contribute significantly to the research activities of the department and mentor.
• Write and contribute to research funding proposals.
• Publish research findings in high-quality journals and other appropriate research outlets.
• Work with the mentor rather than simply under the mentor, with independence to modify the direction of research where appropriate.
• Contribute to the academic environment of IIT Madras.
• Serve as a co-guide for B.Tech., DD, M.Sc., M.A., and M.Tech. student projects along with the mentor, where applicable.
• Participate in conferences, subject to availability of funds.
• IPDFs may also be utilized as guest faculty by the department and compensated according to applicable guest-faculty rules.

Fellowship Benefits

• Monthly Fellowship: ₹1,30,000 consolidated, comprising ₹70,000 from the Institute and a minimum ₹60,000 faculty/project-funded top-up.
• Contingency Grant: ₹2,00,000 per year for travel, contingency expenses, and consumables.
• Medical Benefits/Insurance: As applicable to Ph.D. scholars at IIT Madras.
• Conference Participation: National or international conference participation may be permitted subject to availability of funds.
• Leave: Up to 30 days of leave with fellowship per completed year, on a pro-rata basis.
• Maternity Leave: Available to eligible women IPDFs subject to the specified service and documentation requirements.
• Guest Faculty Opportunity: Eligible fellows may be appointed as guest faculty and receive additional compensation according to applicable rules.

Note: IPDFs are not eligible for Institute accommodation or HRA.

Selection Process

The selection process includes:

1. Identify a suitable IIT Madras faculty member as a potential mentor.
2. Prepare and submit a research proposal to the mentor.
3. Obtain the mentor’s concurrence and signed commitment of funds.
4. The department scrutinizes the application for eligibility.
5. Eligible candidates undergo a seminar-based evaluation by the Departmental Evaluation Committee (DEC).
6. The evaluation considers:
   • Strength and novelty of the research proposal.
   • Expertise brought by the applicant.
   • Value addition to the department and applicant.
7. Suitable candidates are evaluated and interviewed by the Institute Selection Committee (ISC).
8. The ISC recommends candidates to the Director for approval.
9. Upon approval, the concerned department issues the offer letter.

Performance Assessment

The IPDF’s performance is reviewed annually by a Performance Assessment Committee (PAC).

For renewal into the second year, the fellow must submit at least one manuscript based on research conducted at IIT Madras during the first year.

The fellow must also present a progress report covering research work and findings, supported by relevant publications, preprints, manuscripts, or research reports.

2. Identify a suitable faculty mentor according to their research area.
3. Discuss the research proposal with the prospective mentor and obtain their concurrence.
4. Complete the Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship application form and obtain the faculty member’s signed Commitment of Funds.
5. Submit the application and all required documents by email to the respective faculty mentor.
6. The total size of the documents attached to the email should not exceed 25 MB.
7. A separate application must be submitted for each department applied to.
8. At the time of the interview, candidates must submit a signed printed copy of the Institute PDF application.
