JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme - 2019 in Japan

JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme: The UNU offers Postdoctoral Fellowships aimed at young scholars and policymakers from developing nations, providing a multidisciplinary context to pursue advanced research in sustainability. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with host researchers at domestic universities and research institutions across Japan.

Research Area:
Candidates may apply under one of the following thematic research areas:

  • Governance for Sustainable Development (GSD)
  • Biodiversity & Society (BDS)
  • Water & Resource Management (WRM)
  • Innovation & Education (IVE)

Location: Various host institutions across Japan


Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree received on or after April 2, 2019 (with maternity/paternity leave subtracted).
  • Candidates must be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • Japanese nationals and permanent residents of Japan are not eligible to apply.
  • Candidates with prior experience in the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan are not eligible.

Required Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in a relevant field depending on the chosen research area (environmental science, policy, public administration, education, etc.).
  • A strong record of research and publication within relevant thematic areas.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in other languages is desirable.

Job Description:
The selected candidates will:

  • Conduct advanced research under the supervision of a host researcher.
  • Contribute to the research agenda of the selected thematic programme.
  • Engage in collaborative research with local practitioners and stakeholders.
  • Submit progress reports and participate in academic discussions within the host institution.

Note: Selected candidates are expected to start their fellowship in Japan by November 30, 2025, and reside in Japan for the full duration of the fellowship (24 months).
