Multiple Postdocs and PhD students: The Water, Agriculture and Conservation Innovation Lab (WACI Lab), led by Dr. Bin Peng at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), is recruiting multiple postdoctoral researchers and graduate students for positions starting in spring, summer, or fall of 2024. We are seeking passionate individuals interested in exploring watershed hydrology and water quality, specifically focusing on water, nutrient, and carbon cycles within diverse agricultural landscapes and their impact on downstream water quality.
Table of Positions:
Position | Research Area | Location |
---|---|---|
Postdoctoral Position 1 | Water quality modeling | University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign |
Postdoctoral Position 2 | Environmental data science for water quality | University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign |
PhD Student Position 1 | Water quality monitoring, sensing, and data analytics | University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign |
PhD Student Position 2 | Agricultural water footprint | University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign |
Qualifications for Postdoc positions:
- Ph.D. in earth and environmental science, hydrology, hydrogeology, remote sensing, environmental engineering, electronic engineering, meteorology, geography, mathematics, or a closely related field (expected graduation by the targeted starting date will be considered).
- Prior research experiences in process-based modeling and/or remote sensing of water quality are highly preferred.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, and/or Fortran in the Linux environment) and experience in supercomputing or big data analytical systems.
- Excellent writing skills demonstrated by publication records.
Qualifications for PhD student positions:
- Strong quantitative programming skills and domain science knowledge (e.g., hydrology, environmental biogeochemistry, plant physiology, remote sensing, electronics).
- Proficiency in spoken/written English is mandatory.
- Minimum GPA requirements for graduate admission.
- TOEFL requirements for international students.
Job Descriptions:
Job Opportunities at the Water, Agriculture and Conservation Innovation Lab (WACI Lab), UIUC
Postdoctoral Position 1: Water quality modeling
- Advance understanding of the complex two-way scaling from field-scale management interventions to watershed-scale water quality through computational and process-based modeling.
Postdoctoral Position 2: Environmental data science for water quality
- Improve prediction capability of water quality with environmental data science techniques, linking environmental drivers and management factors with water quality state variables.
PhD Student Position 1: Water quality monitoring, sensing, and data analytics
- Utilize high-frequency water quality monitoring data to discover knowledge about nutrient export patterns and pathways from field to watershed scales.
PhD Student Position 2: Agricultural water footprint
- Improve quantification of green, blue, and gray water footprints of agricultural production through improved process-based modeling and remote sensing at regional to global scales.
