For new entrants, candidates must have a Ph.D. in the relevant/equivalent discipline and First Class in the preceding degrees, from Bachelor’s degree onward. Degrees should be from institutions/universities recognized by UGC, AICTE, AIU or the Government of India.
Professor
- Ph.D.
- 10 years after Ph.D. or 13 years total working experience
- At least 7 years should be after Ph.D.
- 3 years’ experience at Associate Professor Level-13A2, or 4 years at Level-13A1, or an equivalent combination/position in an institution of repute, R&D laboratory or relevant industry
- Minimum cumulative credit points: 80
Associate Professor
- Ph.D.
- Six years after Ph.D., including at least 3 years as Assistant Professor Grade-I, Level-12; OR
- Nine years total working experience, including 3 years after Ph.D. and 3 years as Assistant Professor Grade-I, Level-12, or equivalent
- Minimum cumulative credit points: 50
Assistant Professor Grade-I
- Ph.D.
- Three years after Ph.D. or six years total teaching and research experience in an institution of repute, R&D laboratory or relevant industry
- Minimum cumulative credit points: 20
Assistant Professor Grade-II
- Ph.D.
- No experience requirement specified
- Appointment is at Level-10 on contract basis
The prescribed pay levels and entry pay are: Professor Level-14A (₹1,59,100), Associate Professor Level-13A2 (₹1,39,600), Assistant Professor Grade-I Level-12 (₹1,01,500), and Assistant Professor Grade-II Level-10 (₹70,900).
Additional Eligibility Conditions
- If “First Class” is not stated on preceding degree certificates, candidates should generally have at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale or 60% marks.
- Candidates with a direct Ph.D. after a four-year B.E./B.Tech. degree may also be eligible, subject to the prescribed conditions and undertaking.
- Foreign degrees may be considered if awarded by a recognized national university/institution of the respective country.
- Experience and qualifications will be evaluated according to the applicable NIT Statutes and Government of India rules.

Selection Process
The selection process includes:
- Scrutiny of applications for eligibility.
- Shortlisting based on applicable criteria, including credit points, experience, research and academic performance.
- Departmental shortlisting based on specialization and institutional requirements.
- Presentation/lecture by shortlisted candidates.
- Personal interview.
- Candidates will be required to deliver a lecture on a core undergraduate subject using a black/white board.
- During the interview, candidates will present their past research work and future research plans.
Candidates residing abroad may participate in technical presentation/interview through video conferencing, at their own risk regarding connectivity issues.
