Research Area
The fellowship supports interdisciplinary research across all scientific disciplines available at ISTA, including basic research in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that combine and explore cross-disciplinary approaches.
If external interdisciplinary expertise is required for the research, a secondary external supervisor can be proposed. Selected fellows will also have the opportunity to engage in short secondments (up to three months per year) with this external supervisor.

Eligibility/Qualification
Interested candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) awarded before commencing the fellowship. Applicants can apply before completing their doctorate but must anticipate completing it by the fellowship start date.
- Preferably, applicants should possess initial postdoctoral experience or significant interdisciplinary training.
- Internal applicants should not have been employed at ISTA prior to June 13, 2024.
- The fellowship must commence within six months of notification of the award.
- Applicants must be available for a remote interview approximately 8-10 weeks after the submission deadline.
Exceptional candidates falling outside these criteria may also be considered by the selection panel.
Job Description
Successful applicants to the NOMIS-ISTA Fellowship will:
- Conduct interdisciplinary research supervised by two group leaders from different disciplines, one of whom must be based at ISTA.
- Benefit from dual mentorship and access to ISTA’s world-class facilities, including scientific service units, resources, and research funding.
- Explore innovative, high-risk, and cross-disciplinary research ideas in a collaborative environment.
- Have the opportunity to participate in ISTA’s educational programs and networks but are not required to undertake teaching duties.
The program also provides:
- Leadership and career development training, along with exposure to ISTA’s and the NOMIS Foundation’s global innovation networks.
- Financial support for research and travel.
