Summary

eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image at the University of Basel invites applications from outstanding junior and senior researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences for two one-year NOMIS Fellowships. Beginning September 1, 2027, the fellowships support groundbreaking research on how images act as models or paradigms in scientific and aesthetic contexts. Fellows will pursue their research free from teaching and administrative obligations while receiving a generous salary, travel funds, conference funds, and access to excellent academic infrastructure.

Research Area

The interdisciplinary study of images as instruments of human knowledge and cultural practices. Projects should focus on how images act as models or paradigms in scientific and aesthetic contexts, serving to make complex structures visible and accessible to interpretation. Topics may include the history and theory of imaging techniques in the natural sciences, ideals and stereotypes in social and political discussions, or the formation of canons, iconographies, and styles in the arts.

Location

In residence at eikones in Basel, Switzerland.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Applicants must possess a doctoral degree.
  • Applicants must have previously published either a monograph (e.g., their dissertation) OR three articles in journals or collected volumes.
  • Junior and senior researchers from all academic fields (humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences) whose research relates to images as models are invited to apply. Preference will be given to excellent young scholars with innovative approaches.

Job Description

  • Pursue independent, groundbreaking research related to images as models, free from teaching and administrative duties.
  • Investigate the functions and effects of images from analytical and empirical perspectives, rooting the project in a specific discipline while reflecting on its relationship to image studies.
  • Maintain residency at eikones in Basel for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Actively participate in select institutional events at the center.
