Non-Clinical PhD Studentship: The University of Cambridge’s Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit and the AstraZeneca Discovery Centre at Cambridge are offering a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship focusing on the project “Partitioning the effects of high body mass index on risk of future comorbidities.” The successful candidate will work on predicting specific comorbidities associated with high BMI using genomic and computational approaches.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Minimum first or upper second-class degree from a UK university or equivalent from an overseas university
  • Preferably a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as epidemiology, (bio)statistics, genomics, bioinformatics
  • Strong quantitative skills and programming experience (e.g., R, Python, etc)
  • Enjoy working in a team environment
  • Open to UK citizens or overseas students meeting UK residency requirements (home fees)
  • International students capable of covering additional costs of overseas tuition fees through scholarships or funding schemes will also be considered (self-funding not permitted)

Job Description:
The selected candidate will collaborate on a project focused on utilizing large-scale human genetic resources with deep phenotyping data to investigate the molecular basis of BMI and identify specific axes of risk associated with high BMI. Genomic and computational approaches such as GWAS, polygenic scores, Mendelian randomization, and machine learning methods will be employed to integrate genetic data, health records, and multi-omics data from blood.
