Research Project & Description

The primary focus of this research position is the selective modification of carbohydrates and glycosides. The researcher will develop and optimize radical reaction methodologies, synthesize and purify complex chemical targets, conduct mechanistic studies, and perform rigorous analytical characterization of synthesized compounds. The project aims to establish greener, highly efficient pathways to access biologically and commercially valuable glycomimetics and glycoside products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute multi-step syntheses of carbohydrates, glycosides, glycomimetics, and related high-value target compounds.
  • Develop novel, selective sugar-modification and functionalization methodologies utilizing traceless activation strategies.
  • Develop and optimize radical coupling reactions, including exploring reaction design, efficiency, selectivity, and substrate scope evaluation.
  • Strategize protecting-group manipulations and control chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity on complex carbohydrate scaffolds.
  • Purify target compounds and intermediate products using modern separation techniques such as flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, and recrystallization.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Candidates applying for this Research Fellow position must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related academic discipline.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong hands-on experience in carbohydrate chemistry, sugar modification, and the synthesis of glycosides or glycomimetics.
  • Reaction Development: Proven track record in designing and optimizing radical coupling reactions (experience with photochemical or electrochemical approaches is highly advantageous).
  • Synthesis Skills: Excellent organic synthesis skills, including deep knowledge of protecting-group strategies and controlling chemical selectivity (chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity).
  • Analytical Methods: High proficiency in structural characterization and product purification using techniques like 1D/2D NMR, LC-MS/HRMS, flash chromatography, and HPLC/UPLC.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their application online via the official NTU Workday career portal. Please prepare your updated CV, a cover letter outlining your research experience, and contact details for references.
