Optical Sensing Postdoc at Berkeley, California, USA

Miller Research Fellowship 2020-2023, UC Berkeley, USA

Optical Sensing Postdoc: The Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at Berkeley Lab is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in Optical Sensing with expertise in distributed fiber optic sensing technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing optical fibers to detect chemical species, improving technologies for real-time processing, and developing optical fiber protection and installation protocols for long-term survivability in harsh environments. This is a full-time, 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

Designation: Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area: Optical Sensing

Location: Berkeley, California

Eligibility/Qualification: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. They must have expertise in optical fiber design, optical system design, and optical signal analysis methods. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated capability in hands-on laboratory work with optics, optical fibers, splicing, and termination, expertise in OFDR, Fiber Bragg Gratings, Fabry-Perot interference effects, light propagation in SM/MM fibers, and polarization effects.

Job Description: The candidate will develop and test optical fiber sensing units that can detect gas concentrations, conduct experiments to test the developed sensors, and improve the optical fiber survivability in extreme environments. They will also characterize fiber sensing systems and benchmark against other sensor technologies, develop specifications, test procedures, automated test fixtures, and test scripts, and develop and document algorithms and software for calibration, processing, and broadcasting sensor data. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a diverse group of team members with expertise in geochemistry, geomechanics, civil engineering, and high energy physics, and author peer-reviewed conference or journal papers and contribute to grant proposals.

How to Apply: Applicants can apply directly online and follow the on-line instructions to complete the application process.

Last Date for Apply: Until position filled

Note: The position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636.00 – $7,010.00, and postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract. This position may be subject to a background check. Additionally, all members of the community at Berkeley Lab are required to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible.
