Forschungszentrum Jülich is currently seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate to join their IMD-2 – Materials Synthesis and Manufacturing Processes institute. This position is part of the EU-funded SuMaCer project, focusing on advancing the recycling of solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cell (SOC) materials to improve sustainability and resource efficiency.

Research Focus
The successful candidate will work within the IMD-2 institute, which specializes in high-performance ceramics for energy conversion and storage. The core objective of the SuMaCer project is to establish sustainable recycling strategies for Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs), balancing material science breakthroughs with life-cycle assessments (LCA) and digital material flow management.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree (with excellent grades) in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
- Expertise: Strong background in materials science and solid-state chemistry. Experience with ceramic process engineering, powder synthesis, and ceramic component manufacturing is essential.
- Assets: Knowledge of ceramic ion conductors, electrochemistry, recycling, or life-cycle analysis is highly advantageous.
- Languages: Fluent in English (minimum B2 level) and German (negotiation-level proficiency).
- Soft Skills: Strong teamwork, independent work ethic, and an interest in international research cooperation.
Job Description & Key Tasks
- Reviewing literature and conducting characterization of End-of-Life/End-of-Use cells.
- Developing and optimizing strategies for the processing, use, and cleaning of recycled materials.
- Manufacturing and optimizing pastes/slurries for the production of new, recycling-based full cells.
- Characterizing the properties of new cell variants and providing feedback on microstructure and composition.
- Supporting project partners by gathering data for Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and digital material flow management.
