Ph.D. Position in Microbiology: The Department of Agronomy at Purdue University is offering a fully-funded Ph.D. position in Soil Health and Microbiology, commencing in Summer/Fall 2024. This position is supported by a USDA NIFA Organic Transitions grant and will be co-advised by Dr. Yichao Rui, Assistant Professor of Agroecology, and Dr. Roland Wilhelm, Assistant Professor of Soil Microbiology. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team, focusing on soil health, microbiology, geospatial modeling, and outreach and extension.

Eligibility/Qualification: Applicants should have a strong interest in soil health, biogeochemistry, and environmental microbiology. A B.Sc. degree in these or related fields is preferred, but highly motivated applicants with a B.Sc. in biology, chemistry, or microbiology will also be considered. Previous research experience or coursework related to these topics is beneficial. A commitment to contributing to a collaborative and inclusive environment is highly valued.

Description:

Ph.D. Position in Soil Health and Microbiology

The selected candidate will collaborate with advisors and project team members to conduct in-depth soil health assessments of various organic cropping systems and assess in-situ soil microbial activity. The research aims to advance understanding of how organic practices influence microbial processes and subsoil characteristics over time, quantifying the full soil health benefits of organic practices, even at greater depths.
