PhD Candidate for the Animal Health: IRTA is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate to join the Animal Health Program. This position is part of the “NEXT GENERATION VACCINES AGAINST GASTROINTESTINAL MUCOSAL PATHOGENS, USING HELICOBACTER PYLORI AS MODEL PATHOGEN” research project under the Vax2Muc Project (Horizon H2020 – European Programme). The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joaquim Segalés and Dr. Marina Sibila Vidal at CReSA, Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès), Barcelona. The position is full-time and offered for a duration of one year, extendable to a maximum of 3 years. The salary ranges from €1,291.18 to €1,729.26 gross per month.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Hold a degree in Veterinary Medicine (preferentially), Biology, or similar.
  • Hold a Master’s degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, animal health, or similar (for non-veterinarians).
  • Meet requirements for access to a doctoral program at Catalan universities.
  • Do not hold a previous PhD degree.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience in molecular, immunological, and/or virological techniques.
  • Experience in in vitro and/or in vivo models.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Job Description:

PhD Candidate for the Animal Health Program

The PhD student will be responsible for various research activities, including:

  • Developing and optimizing an animal model (pig) to study Helicobacter pylori infection.
  • Applying and validating PCR and ELISA methods to detect the bacterium’s genome and antibodies.
  • Studying the pathogenesis and immunity of H. pylori infection in pigs.
  • Testing vaccine products against H. pylori developed by the EU consortium in the pig model.
  • Disseminating research results in scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

Languages:

  • Proficiency in English.
  • Knowledge of Catalan and Spanish is valued.
