Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Proficient in English with good communication skills.
  • Basic programming skills in Python, Bash, or R.
  • Enthusiastic, curious, and open-minded individual.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Prior experience in microbiology research and environmental metagenomics is advantageous.

Job Description: As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Investigate the influence of mobile genetic elements on the evolution of Asgard archaea.
  • Develop innovative computational methods for extracting viral genomes from metagenomic datasets.
  • Create novel approaches to associate viruses with their hosts.
  • Establish precise and reproducible methods for annotating viral genomes.
  • Collaborate with a diverse research team and contribute to teaching activities (up to 10% of working time).

We Offer:

  • Employment for 0.8 (5-year contract) – 1.0 FTE (4-year contract).
  • Gross starting salary of €2,770 per month, increasing to €3,539 in the fourth year (salary scale P).
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Initial 18-month contract with possible extension based on positive performance evaluation.
