PhD Candidate in Microbiology: Join the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) as a PhD Candidate in Microbiology and contribute to cutting-edge research in host-microbe interactions within recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Explore the physiology and interactions of nitrogen-cycling micro-organisms in biofilters and fish gills to enhance our understanding of sustainable aquaculture practices. Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Life Sciences, or a related field.
  • Proficient in English with good communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, curious, and open-minded individual.
  • Keen interest in host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions.
  • Prior experience in microbiology research and bioinformatics is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Statistical and data analysis skills.

Job Description: As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Develop new methods for selectively studying and isolating nitrogen-cycling micro-organisms.
  • Investigate the physiology and interactions of these micro-organisms in biofilters and fish gills.
  • Contribute to the understanding of host-microbe interactions in recirculating aquaculture systems.
  • Work on the development of sustainable aquaculture practices.
  • Manage a teaching load of up to 10% of your working time.

We Offer:

  • Employment for 1.0 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent).
  • Gross starting salary of €2,541 per month, increasing to €3,247 in the fourth year (salary scale P).
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Initial 18-month contract with possible extension based on positive performance evaluation.
