Summary
Geisenheim University, Germany, is inviting applications for a PhD Candidate / Research Assistant (65%) position in plant virus analysis using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). The doctoral project will use Oxford Nanopore-based long-read RNA sequencing and bioinformatics to improve the diagnosis and genomic characterization of Grapevine Pinot Gris Virus (GPGV).
The project will investigate GPGV infections in German wine-growing regions, including virus detection, genome reconstruction, genetic diversity, symptom development, and possible natural transmission through animal vectors. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of molecular biology, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, virology, and applied plant science.

The main objectives are to:
- Improve the reliable molecular detection of GPGV directly from grapevine RNA.
- Reconstruct GPGV genomes as completely as possible using long-read sequencing.
- Investigate the genetic diversity of GPGV in German wine-growing regions.
- Study why GPGV symptoms vary among different grape varieties, rootstocks, and locations.
- Investigate the natural spread of GPGV, including potential animal vectors.
- Develop new diagnostic and scientific approaches by combining high-throughput RNA extraction, RNA-seq, and comparative viral genomics.
The candidate will receive opportunities to participate in national and international research and training networks covering transcriptomics, virus diagnostics, genomics, and plant breeding. The position also provides opportunities for scientific collaboration, international mobility, professional development, conference participation, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
