PhD Candidate on Plant Microbiome: Are you passionate about unraveling the mysteries of plant microbiomes? Do you have expertise in molecular microbiology, microscopy, and microbiome analysis? Join us as a Ph.D. candidate to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of plant microbiomes at the Faculty of Science, Institute for Biology.
PhD Candidate on Spatial and Temporal Plant Microbiome
Vacancy Number: 14437
Project Description:
In this project, the selected candidate will investigate the influence of plant host genetics on the colonization of microorganisms, focusing on Bacilli. The tasks include assessing microbiome composition in various crop and model plants with biocontrol bacterial strains, testing plant varieties and mutants for endophytic bacteria colonization, and utilizing fluorescence microscopy to study plant-microbiome interaction dynamics.
Selection Criteria:
We are seeking a candidate with:
- Solid background in plant-microbiome interaction, particularly bacterial interactions.
- Experience in plant and bacteria cultivation, microbiome analysis, molecular microbiology (genetic engineering of bacteria), and fluorescence microscopy.
- Background in microbial ecology and evolutionary theory is advantageous.
- Efficient team worker with excellent communication skills.
- Critical mindset on host-bacteria genetics in plant-microbiomes.
Research at Our Faculty:
The Faculty of Science fosters a dynamic international environment, prioritizing personal and academic development. Research spans various disciplines, including biology, environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and bio-pharmaceutical sciences.
Institute for Biology:
The Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) conducts curiosity-driven and solutions-driven research, focusing on biodiversity, health, and societal challenges. The candidate will join a dynamic research group exploring plant beneficial bacteria, microbiomes, and bacteria-fungi interaction.
Terms and Conditions:
- Full-time position initially for one year, extendable to three years after positive evaluation.
- Salary range: €2,770 to €3,539 gross per month.
- Attractive benefits package, including holiday bonuses, end-of-year bonuses, and training opportunities.
- PhD students are part of the Leiden University Graduate School of Science.
