PhD Candidate Position: The Schumann Lab at the Chemical Glycobiology Laboratory is offering a Crick PhD project for 2024. The project focuses on developing chemical tools to gain a better understanding of protein glycosylation. Glycosylation is a critical posttranslational protein modification, and this research aims to investigate how individual glycosyltransferase enzymes function and impact physiological properties and interactions with other biomolecules.

Table:
Designation | Research Area | Location | Eligibility/Qualification |
---|---|---|---|
PhD Candidate | Chemical Glycobiology | Schumann Lab, Chemical Glycobiology Laboratory | Background in chemical biology, chemistry, or biochemistry with an interest in tool generation and application. Knowledge of imaging, molecular biology, and tissue culture is preferred. Synthetic chemistry background is desirable but not essential. |
Job Description:
Schumann Lab | Expanding the Glycoscope: New Chemical Tools to Understand Protein Glycosylation
The project involves the development of chemical tools to act as traceable reporters for the activities of individual glycosyltransferases. These tools will enable researchers to gain direct insights into the enzymes responsible for introducing glycans, a complex and abundant protein modification. The research will employ cutting-edge methods of imaging, mass spectrometry glycoproteomics, and genome engineering to uncover the substrate proteins and glycosylation sites affected by disease-relevant glycosyltransferase enzymes.
Candidate Background: The ideal candidate for this position is a chemical biologist, chemist, or biochemist with an interest in tool generation and application. A background in imaging, molecular biology, and tissue culture is advantageous. While a background in synthetic chemistry is desirable, it is not a strict requirement. The Schumann Lab emphasizes an inclusive group atmosphere and expects the successful candidate to adhere to the highest standards of laboratory safety.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should submit their application with the following documents:
- Cover Letter describing research interests and qualifications.
- CV.
- Contact information for references.
The application deadline is 09 November 2023, at 12:00 GMT. Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Application submission details can be found at this link.
