Eligibility/Qualification

  • MSc in computer science, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in foundational algorithmics and computational complexity research.
  • Mature mathematical knowledge and programming skills.
  • Familiarity with Linux and experience with low-level programming languages (e.g., C/C++) or hardware design (e.g., VHDL).

  • Experience in Bayesian networks and approximate Bayesian inference is appreciated.

Description
This PhD position involves developing and analyzing new classes of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms, such as Gibbs Sampling and Metropolis-Hastings, using advanced photonic manipulation technology. The research aims to leverage synchronised stochasticity for energy, time, and space efficiency in approximate Bayesian inference. The role includes:

  • Developing and implementing novel MCMC algorithms.
  • Analyzing theoretical properties of these algorithms.
  • Collaborating with the interdisciplinary research team and contributing to academic teaching in AI programs.
