PhD: Crop Biology: A full-time PhD position is available at the University of Leuven, Belgium, focusing on the impact of innovative lighting strategies on greenhouse crop biology. This project, supervised by Prof. Bram Van de Poel and Prof. Devang Mehta, aims to enhance crop productivity and quality while reducing energy costs and carbon footprint through advanced research on pulsed- and twilight lighting.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • European Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Bioscience Engineering, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in plant physiology and photobiology.
  • Team-player with a critical mind and a willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Relevant training or expertise in plant physiology or photobiology is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Eligibility to apply for a personal PhD grant (e.g., FWO fellowship).

Job Description:
The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research on the physiological and molecular regulation of pulsed- and twilight lighting on horticultural crops.
  • Perform greenhouse and lab experiments, including physiological measurements, biochemical assays, and -omics technologies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within and outside the lab, and participate in daily lab activities.
  • Guide master thesis students and disseminate research results through scientific publications and conferences.
  • Engage in a larger applied research project in collaboration with experimental research stations in Flanders.
  • Receive advanced training in molecular biology and plant physiology.
  • Have access to state-of-the-art growth facilities and career development opportunities through the Arenberg Doctoral School.
