PHD: CRYOGENIC VIBRATION ISOLATION: The Faculty of Science, Leiden Institute of Physics, in collaboration with the National Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef, is seeking a passionate and driven individual for a prestigious scholarship opportunity as a PhD Candidate in Cryogenic Vibration Isolation for Einstein Telescope, Quantum Science, and Industry.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Research Master, MSc, or similar in mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Proficient in English with excellent communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational abilities.
  • Independent and collaborative work capabilities.
  • Skills in finite element analysis, measurement and control systems, and knowledge in superconductivity are desirable.

Job Description:

As a PhD candidate in this program, you will:

  • Conduct finite element modelling of vibration filter designs.
  • Collaborate with fine-mechanics departments to build vibration reduction systems.
  • Measure and analyze device performance at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Develop novel techniques to reduce low-frequency vibrations at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Work on magnetically levitated cryogenic 6D acceleration sensors.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and project partners.
  • Assist with teaching and student supervision.
