PhD Fellow in Community Ecology: The University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) invites applications for a fully-funded PhD Research Fellow position in Aquatic and/or Community Ecology. This opportunity, located in Telemark County, Norway, focuses on the study of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in Nordic and Alpine lakes, evaluating their responses to ongoing global change. The project involves biological time series data analysis using advanced statistical methods and bioinformatics, along with laboratory work on field samples.
PhD Research Fellow in Aquatic and/or Community Ecology
Study Area: Ecology, specifically Aquatic and/or Community Ecology.
Location: University of South-Eastern Norway, Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health, Bø, Midt-Telemark, Telemark County, Norway.
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Ecology or related areas.
- Familiarity with R or other statistical languages (Matlab, Python).
- Basic knowledge in bioinformatics and community analysis.
- Experience in molecular methods, especially DNA extraction from environmental samples.
- Familiarity or interest in microscopic analysis of phytoplankton.
- Preferably possess a driver’s license.
- Comfortable with fieldwork and working from a boat.
- Proficient in oral and written English.
Description: The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing project on plankton communities in lakes. Tasks include assessing biological time series data, applying advanced statistical methods and bioinformatics, and conducting laboratory work on field samples. Collaboration with experts from the Norwegian Institute for Water- and Nature Research (NIVA, NINA) and project partners in Austria is integral to the project. The position requires publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals.
