PhD Fellowship in Computational Biophysics, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

The University of Copenhagen has four campus areas. As distances in Copenhagen are relatively small, it is easy to get from one campus to the other either by bicycle or public transportation. The campus areas are integrated into the city of Copenhagen and students use the facilities available in the city, adding a lively buzz to the streets and cafés of Copenhagen.

PhD Fellowship in Computational Biophysics: The Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a PhD position in Computational Biophysics. This position, part of the “SEECLEAR – Wood formation in near-real time” project, aims to use computer simulations to understand the emergence of mitochondrial membrane shapes. The project is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Designation: PhD Fellowship
Research Area: Computational Biophysics
Location: Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Background in physics, chemistry, biology, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of molecular dynamics simulations and computer programming is advantageous.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work on the “SEECLEAR” project, focusing on understanding the biomolecular and structural changes in secondary cell walls during wood formation. The project involves integrating experimental and simulation data to comprehend biomechanical properties. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Conducting computer simulations to understand mitochondrial membrane shapes.
  2. Integrating experimental and high-resolution simulation data into mesoscopic simulations.
  3. Investigating biomechanical properties of secondary cell walls during wood formation.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are seeking a PhD candidate with a background in physics, chemistry, biology, bioinformatics, or related fields. Knowledge of molecular dynamics simulations and computer programming is considered advantageous.

PhD Programme:

  • Three-year full-time study within the regular PhD program (5+3 scheme).
  • Eligibility requires an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time employment for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Employment is conditional upon successful enrollment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen.

Responsibilities and Tasks in the PhD Programme:

  • Conduct independent research under supervision.
  • Complete PhD courses (approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE).
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution.
  • Engage in teaching and knowledge dissemination activities.
  • Write scientific papers for high-impact journals.
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis.
