Description
The PhD project will utilize new tools to estimate both contemporary and historical effective population sizes, examining correlations between the reported decline of rare plant species and inferred effective population size trajectories. The study will also investigate the impact of habitat and species protection on this decline and explore mutation accumulation if necessary.
Practical work involves:
- Collecting plant materials
- Conducting wet lab work
- Performing bioinformatics and population genetic analyses
- Growing plants to assess mutation accumulation
Profile of the Candidate
The successful applicant should be highly motivated and possess:
- A strong interest in evolutionary and conservation biology
- Commitment to fieldwork and wet-lab activities
- Skills in bioinformatics, including R and shell programming
- Proficient data analysis using population genetics methodologies
