Research Area

This project aims to advance the understanding of how farming systems and land management practices influence nutrient loading in European freshwater systems. It will employ monitoring data to assess the relationship between soil erosion and eutrophication, aiding in the identification of nutrient pollution hotspots.

Location

  • Primary: University of Basel, Switzerland
  • Secondary: Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A Master’s degree in ecology, soil science, agriculture, environmental sciences, or related fields (or nearing completion).
  • Strong interest in soil erosion modelling and phosphorus-driven eutrophication.
  • Experience in soil monitoring and erosion processes; skills in GIS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and programming (R or Python) are desirable.
  • Candidates must possess the nationality of an EU Member State or an associated country or have resided in an EU Member State for at least five years.

Description

The PhD project emphasizes the development of integrated approaches to quantify and mitigate soil- and sediment-driven nutrient pollution in European catchments. It aims to establish a monitoring framework utilizing in situ observations and satellite data, directly contributing to significant EU policies aimed at environmental protection.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following documents via the online recruiting platform:

  1. A letter of motivation
  2. A short statement of research and teaching interests
  3. A comprehensive CV
  4. Contact details of at least two references

Applications sent via email will not be accepted.
