PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics: The University of Groningen invites applications for a 4-year PhD position in Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics for Cognitive Devices. The research project focuses on developing new AI methods aligning learning and reasoning for the design of cognitive devices, addressing challenges in energy efficiency and computational approaches. The successful candidate will work within the Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials Center (CogniGron).

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Keen interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of artificial intelligence and statistics for cognitive hardware design.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (artificial intelligence, mathematics, statistics).
  • Strong skills or a strong interest in mathematics and programming.

Job Description:

PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics for Cognitive Devices (1.0 FTE) (V23.0770)

  • Develop new artificial intelligence methods aligning learning and reasoning for cognitive devices.
  • Physiological investigation of pathogens under the influence of new active substances.
  • Molecular characterization of targets, focusing on cell death, metabolic processes, binding partners, and molecular-level inhibition.
  • Utilize modern microbiological and molecular biological methods, high-resolution fluorescence microscopy, protein biochemistry, and interaction analysis.
  • Establish new technologies for specific molecular characterization of active substances.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Salary: €2,770 gross per month in the first year, up to €3,539 gross per month in the fourth year (full-time).
  • Holiday allowance: 8% gross annual income, and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Full-time position (1.0 FTE) with a 1-year initial contract, renewable for another three years based on progress.
  • PhD training programme included.
