Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Academic background in ethnoecology or anthropology
  • Experience in ecology, particularly in community ecology or conservation
  • Training in environmental genomics considered if relevant experience exists
  • Proficiency in mixed approaches to ethnoecological data collection (e.g., semi-structured interviews, focus groups)
  • Strong command of biostatistics (database management, R software)
  • Excellent command of English
  • Ability to demonstrate autonomy, adaptability, and initiative during field missions

Description:
The thesis aims to integrate local ecological knowledge and environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to assess marine biodiversity and the values communities associate with it in Kenya and Tanzania. The project involves participatory mapping, ecological assessments, and community engagement to develop conservation scenarios addressing fishery management under climate change.

The candidate will:

  • Collaborate with local communities to identify marine areas and species of interest
  • Conduct fieldwork and surveys to gather data
  • Analyze data using ecological models and participatory methods to assess community preferences
