PhD in Intelligent Sensor Fusion: The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on enhancing sustainability in the food industry through intelligent sensor fusion technologies. This research will contribute to optimizing cleaning processes and improving water reuse in food production, addressing significant resource consumption and environmental challenges.

PhD in Intelligent Sensor Fusion for Sustainable Cleaning in the Food Industry

Designation

PhD Researcher

Research Area

  • Intelligent Sensor Technologies
  • Sustainable Cleaning Processes
  • Water Quality Assessment and Reuse

Location

Loughborough University, UK

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent in Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • Preferred background in sensor technologies, water chemistry, or data analytics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for research innovation.

Description

This PhD project aims to address inefficiencies in the food industry’s cleaning processes, which account for approximately 30% of a site’s water and energy usage. The research will involve:

  • Developing high-quality optical fouling detection methods.
  • Correlating water quality parameters using existing sensors.
  • Creating decision-support tools for improved cleaning and water management.
  • Employing ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence imaging to monitor food fouling removal during Clean-in-Place (CIP) processes.

The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, opportunities for publication, and collaboration with industry partners.
