PhD Fellowship IN Switzerland

PhD in Polar Dynamical Meteorology: The Institute of Geography (GIUB) and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) at the University of Bern invite applications for a PhD position focused on constraining precipitation efficiency in large-scale deep cloud systems using water isotope observations. This scholarship is part of the SNSF-funded Starting Grant project PERISCOPE.

Eligibility/QualificationMaster’s in Atmospheric and Climate Science or a related field; programming skills in Python and Bash preferred
Employment DurationFixed term for 3 years
Start Date01 May 2026 or by agreement
Application Deadline20 February 2026

Research Area

The focus is on the investigation of precipitation formation processes in midlatitude and polar regions, particularly related to warm conveyor belts (WCBs) and atmospheric rivers (ARs). The aim is to assess the conversion efficiency of these processes using water isotope measurements.

Location

University of Bern, Switzerland

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Atmospheric and Climate Science or an equivalent field.
  • Basic programming skills or a strong interest in learning to code in Python and Bash.
  • Fluency in written and oral English.
  • Prior knowledge in tracer-based meteorological diagnostics is advantageous.
  • Motivation for fieldwork in extreme environments.

Description

The PhD candidate will work on quantifying conversion efficiency in large-scale deep cloud systems in the Southern Hemisphere. This includes analyzing existing ground-based isotopic measurements and satellite observations. The project will collaborate with international partners and focus on field campaigns in Antarctica, examining snow accumulation processes.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following as a single PDF file:

  • A cover letter (max 1 page) including a personal statement summarizing the Master’s thesis and motivation for the PhD.
  • A CV.
  • A copy of the MSc degree certificate (if available).
