PhD in Radiochemistry at KU Leuven, Belgium

Postdoctoral Fellow in Belgium

PhD in Radiochemistry: A funded PhD position is available at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK CEN) in collaboration with KU Leuven, focusing on optimizing the dissolution and chemical processing of MOX fuel. This research aims to enhance the reprocessing of nuclear fuel and reduce waste, particularly for compounds with high plutonium content.

PhD in Radiochemistry – Optimizing Dissolution and Chemical Processing of Fast Reactor MOX Fuel

Designation

PhD Candidate in Radiochemistry

Research Area

  • Dissolution and Chemical Processing of MOX Fuel
  • Radiochemical Analysis
  • Waste Management in Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Location

SCK CEN, Mol, Belgium, and KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • Knowledge of solvent extraction and separation chemistry is advantageous
  • Strong experimental skills in a laboratory setting
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively

Description

The PhD study involves developing advanced dissolution methods for difficult-to-dissolve MOX fuels and CHON compliant solvent extraction processes to recycle plutonium and uranium. The candidate will perform radiochemical analysis and measurement uncertainty analysis, and will engage in hands-on experiments using advanced techniques like UV/Vis spectroscopy and microscopy.
