Eligibility/Qualification:
- Essential:
- A 1.1 or 2.1 BSc honours degree (or equivalent) in biology, zoology, ecology, conservation, or related subject.
- Strong interest or good understanding of seal ecology.
- Understanding of experimental design, data analysis, and statistics.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Experience in zoological fieldwork, completion of a research project.
- Full, clean driving license.
- Desirable:
- MSc in a relevant subject.
- Experience in analyzing remote sensing imagery.
Description:
The PhD project aims to gather essential data on the population and ecology of seals, particularly grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), within Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, established in April 2024. The research will employ various methodologies, including boat and drone surveys, timelapse camera monitoring, diet sampling, and statistical modeling. Specific objectives include determining seal abundance, breeding population estimates, understanding factors influencing seal behavior, and quantifying prey species consumption.
