Eligibility/Qualification
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related discipline.
- High competency in metallography, including best practices for cutting and polishing.
- Strong knowledge in various metal characterization methods such as:
- Visible-light microscopy
- Scanning electron microscopy
- X-ray diffraction
- Transmission electron microscopy
- Electron back-scattered diffraction
- X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy
- Focused ion beam microscopy
- Atom probe tomography
- Deep comprehension of physical metallurgy.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and work independently or in a team environment.
Description
The Nuclear Material Processing group at PNNL seeks a PhD intern to assist in establishing a flexible capability to produce plutonium oxide for identifying signatures associated with plutonium production. The intern will support the development of actinide processing capabilities, broaden their laboratory experiences based on project availability, and contribute to a variety of research tasks collaboratively.
