PhD Opportunity: Innovating Sustainable MOF-Glass Composites at ICMM-CSIC, Spain

Postdoc in Spain

Summary

The Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) is offering a PhD project focused on the design, synthesis, and advanced structural characterization of MOF-glass composites. The project aims to develop functional hybrid materials for sustainable applications, including adsorption, catalysis, and environmental remediation, by combining the porosity of crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the processability of glassy matrices.

Research Area

Chemistry and Materials Science (specifically Metal-Organic Frameworks, Crystallography, and Inorganic Chemistry).

Location

Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, 3, Cantoblanco, 28049 Madrid, Spain.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related areas. A Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields (already completed or to be completed in the upcoming academic year).
  • Experience: Previous experience in crystallography and inorganic chemistry is required. Experience specifically with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired.
  • Skills: Strong interest in multidisciplinary work and a motivation to learn across various scientific fields. Good interpersonal skills are required.
  • Language: Good written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory.

Job Description

The selected candidate will work on developing new composite materials by integrating crystalline MOFs with both inorganic and hybrid glasses. The core focus will be on understanding the structural interactions at the interfaces between these phases. The research involves using advanced analytical techniques, notably Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis, to investigate complex structures and establish these MOF-glass composites as a new class of materials for environmental and energy-related technologies.
